Let’s eat politics with a side of cake!

Curious about how Finnish politics work? Join us for a fun and informal series where we’ll cover the basics of Finland’s political system, including key institutions, elections, and how you can get involved.

Each session will focus on different topics, such as the government structure, the role of political parties, and how your vote really matters.

We’ll keep it interactive with open discussions and plenty of chances to ask questions.

Let’s make politics accessible and welcoming for everyone—with coffee and a side of cake!

Circles will be facilitated by amazing experts who will answer your questions and get the conversation started:

  • Robert Trygg, A scholar and educator focused on contemporary history and politics

  • Theresia Bilola, PhD in Social Sciences. Sustainability policy specialist, first term deputy councillor, member of Turku’s Multicultural Council and vice-member of the Turku Region Transport Board

  • Elina Rantanen, Deputy Mayor of Turku

A little about Koroinen Kahvila

  • Cakes and coffees can be purchased from Koroinen cafe.

  • The cafe is open from 12 to 4 and offers vegetarian lunch, drinks, and both sweet and savory baked goods, including vegan and gluten-free choices.

    • Elections: Explanation of types of elections (national, municipal, European) and voting procedures.

    • Becoming Active: Ways to engage in the political process, including voting, joining political parties, and participating in local community events.

    • Citizen Initiatives: Overview of how citizens can propose legislation and influence decision-making through initiatives.

    • Know your rights: What are your rights to voting as internationals, students and newcomers?

    • Venue: Kahvila Koroinen

  • Elina Rantanen, Deputy Mayors of Turku, will lead the circle discussion

    • Sunday, November 24, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

    • Finding Information: Let’s discuss the resources available in Turku and learn about some of the names and processes that impact your everyday life in the city.  

    • Building a Network: Importance of connecting with local groups, NGOs, and community organizations that focus on political issues.

    • Venue: Kahvila Koroinen

  • Dates and speakers will be announced soon.

    • Pressing Debates: Let’s openly discuss the pressing political issues in Finland, such as immigration, budget cuts and more.

    • Public Policy: Overview of the current political scene, including who are the parties, why the landscape is the way it is now.  

Circles are Free and open to all. But registration is a must.
